You are invited to join in this Member Cafe Conversation as we explore how the rapidly evolving socio-political landscape across the U.S. and around the world is impacting our conflict intervention work, hosted by Jared Ordway, Judy Saul and Tom Wahlrab.

About this Cafe:

Across the US, and the world, profound shifts in sociopolitical dynamics are unfolding. In the United States, deepening social and economic grievances, identity-based othering, and corrosive cultural narratives are eroding social cohesion and fueling the escalation of latent conflict. Politically motivated violence has trended upward, becoming more frequent and increasingly normalized over time. In parallel, constricting civic spaces see public expression, dissent, and participation increasingly contested.

These evolving national dynamics pose a fundamental test for the ISCT, particularly for its US-based practitioner network, revealing potential threats as well as opportunities. The moment invites reflection on the Transformative approach’s value and contributions. It also calls on us to consider what role transformative conflict intervention might play in shaping the broader national context in uncertain times, and how, if at all, it connects to other nonviolent forms of civic engagement, resilience, or resistance.

At this Member Cafe's we will have conversation on these topics, with space for listening and exchange as we consider the following:

  • What relevance has global or national-level shifts had for your community and work?
  • In what way has the conflict landscape that you engage with been changing?
  • Where local and national dynamics intersect, what dilemmas or impediments to Transformative approaches do you see emerging?
  • In what ways are rising socio-political tensions affecting the way you co-design and support dialogue or mediation in your community?
  • What opportunities do these circumstances offer?

Together, we will explore how, and in what ways, these experiences are shaping Transformative practices around the country, and the world, assessing what this moment demands from a dynamic, committed, and pluralistic community of practice and the Institute that supports us.
